This is a project proposal for an alternative concept of living in the 21st century city; responding to issues emerged in relation to the new way of living in the city; exploring the issues of an ‘on-off city’, ‘front-back facades’ and ’sky-ground-surface’ an attempt to ‘light up’ the city centre at night and to revive the back facades.

Farrer Road Upgrading Project
A project by Yandi Andri Yatmo with Housing and Development Board, Singapore – completed 1999.
Awarded Singapore Institute of Architects 6th Architectural Design Awards 2001 Category E2- Retrofitting.
Upgrading means a better living for the precinct community. It will transform the precinct to better standard of the newer housing estate. Government will upgrade the precinct only if 75% or more of the flat owners are in favour of the upgrading. 75% or more ‘yes’ votes are necessary for the upgrading to proceed. In Farrer Road Project, 96% say ‘yes’: the best support for the last four years [ Strait Times, 20 April 1995 ].
Jury citation: The jury felt that this entry was more deserving than other similar schemes, for the designer’s effort in architecturally integrating the space-adding units with the existing blocks, and coordinating the new elevational composition such that new elements do not appear to be ’stuck-on’ [ Singapore Architect 211, 2001 ].
